Jim Dinning is a corporate director. He is chair of the boards of two publicly traded companies: Russel Metals Inc. and Western Investment Company of Canada Ltd. Mr. Dinning serves on the board of Quirk Logic, a technology business headquartered in Calgary, Alberta. He is a trustee of the Killam Trusts.
His past board service includes serving as chair of Western Financial Group Inc., Liquor Stores N.A. Ltd. and Export Development Canada; he was a director of Parkland Fuel Corporation, Finning International Inc. and Shaw Communications Inc. Prior to his corporate governance career, Mr. Dinning served 11 years as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta and served in three cabinet positions, notably as Provincial Treasurer from 1992 to 1997. From 1997 to 2004, he was executive vice-president of TransAlta Corp. He is past chancellor and now Chancellor Emeritus of the University of Calgary. In 2015, Mr. Dinning was named a Member of the Order of Canada and a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors. He earned a B.Comm and a Master of Public Administration at Queen’s University in the 1970s.
